The Accidental Manager, Flexible Working and the Shrinking Workforce – Strategic Development for the Future

AICDP is hosting this event in line with its reputation of bringing the most important, topical and relevant matters to the attention of the Credit Profession for analysis, understanding and creation of
strategies for success.

Outline

Demographics will be the most important, far-reaching megatrend of this century. The debate, post-Covid, on how and where work is arranged and carried out will be another. On the one hand, individuals will ask increasingly for flexibility and freedom from the office; on the other, organisations will, understandably, require control, accountability and cast-iron evidence that hybrid or flexible working leads to increased productivity.

The interplay between these two realities will force organisations to a fundamental re-assessment of how they make themselves of interest to workers with a choice of who they work for. Thirdly, Accidental Manager is a term used to describe the placing of someone in a managerial position because they have proved to be technically proficient, because they have been in the organisation the longest or just because they happen to be there. This Sink or Swim School of Management Learning results mostly in drownings . . . and is a widespread and popular trend. Organisations invest less each passing year in development and training of their employees and management development is no different. The economic idiocy of appointing managers with no preparation, information, mentoring, development, training or support to roles which they probably don’t understand, and consequently in which they have little chance of succeeding, carries a hidden cost which far exceeds what might otherwise have been spent on adequate preparation with a high chance of success.

Organisations which understand the importance of the inter-play of these three realities, for the rest of this century (Intelligent Organisations), stand a better chance of surviving and succeeding than those which view employees as a cost to be minimised.
Most people would want to work for organisations which treat them well, challenge and develop them and which understand that loyalty is a mutual good and benefit. What is changing in the world is that the balance in the Capitalist Equation of Capital + Labour = Profit is changing irrevocably because of the shrinking workforce. Which kind of organisation will you go and work for when you have a true choice?
